Ramaphosa says Cornubia homes handed to flood-hit families
The Presidency says 145 more houses are under construction, with 460 permanent homes targeted for completion by mid-2027.
President Cyril Ramaphosa says permanent homes were handed to families displaced by KwaZulu-Natal’s 2022 floods at Cornubia in eThekwini on Thursday, 29 October.
In an address published by the Presidency, he said another 145 houses were under construction in Phase 2, with a total of 460 permanent homes expected to be completed by mid-2027.
The address does not specify how many homes were handed over on Thursday. The 460 figure is a completion target, not the number delivered at the ceremony.
Ramaphosa said affected families had first been accommodated in mass care centres and later in temporary emergency housing. He described difficulties accessing transport and schools during that period.
He called for construction problems and issues with beneficiary lists to be resolved, outstanding title deeds to be finalised, and communities to receive clear information about allocations and relocation dates.
The wider Cornubia development is intended to bring housing closer to employment and public services. Ramaphosa said its completed Phase I had provided more than 2,600 houses. That historical total is separate from Thursday’s handover.
