The Electoral Commission says 1,425,942 people were provisionally recorded as having voted during South Africa’s two-day special-voting period, which ended on Tuesday.

Of that preliminary total, 974,852 voted at stations and 451,090 through home visits, IEC chairperson Mosotho Moepya said, according to SAnews.

The figures cover 2 and 3 November and are due to be finalised on Tuesday night. They measure participation, not votes won by parties or candidates.

Special voting ran from 08:00 to 17:00 on both days, serving approved voters at registered voting stations and through visits to their homes.

Counting follows election day

The IEC said special ballots are securely stored and will be counted with election-day ballots after voting stations close on Wednesday, 4 November.

Those counts will form part of the overall results for each voting station. The provisional participation figures do not establish any party’s performance.
