The Northern Cape Provincial Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (PROVJOINTS) has confirmed that comprehensive security measures are in place to ensure peaceful, safe and secure Local Government Elections, while stressing that police will not tolerate violence, threats and intimidation.
South Africans will head to the polls on Wednesday, 4 November, to vote in the Local Government Elections. The day has been declared a public holiday to enable voters to exercise their civic duty.
SAPS Northern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, said PROVJOINTS has undertaken extensive planning, security assessments, intelligence gathering and stakeholder engagements.
“Law enforcement agencies and relevant government departments within the provincial security cluster are on high alert and ready to fulfil their respective responsibilities throughout the electoral period,” she said.
The integrated, intelligence-driven security plan covers all five districts in the Northern Cape. It provides for coordinated deployments, enhanced police visibility, targeted crime prevention operations, rapid response capabilities and continuous monitoring of identified hotspots.
Operational arrangements include protecting voting stations, Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) officials and election personnel; safeguarding election-related infrastructure; and securing the movement and storage of election material.
Deployments will be continuously assessed and adjusted in response to emerging threats and operational needs.
Otola emphasised that SAPS and its security partners remain committed to protecting lives and property, maintaining law and order, and ensuring that eligible voters can exercise their democratic rights freely and without intimidation.
Police will work closely with the IEC, provincial and local government structures, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), traffic authorities, municipal law enforcement agencies, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and other relevant partners.
Coordination through PROVJOINTS will support effective information sharing, timely responses and ongoing assessments of the provincial security environment.
“PROVJOINTS will not tolerate violence, intimidation, threats, incitement, malicious damage to property, disruption of lawful political activities or any other criminal conduct that interferes with the electoral process.
“Law enforcement agencies will act firmly, impartially and within the law. Reported incidents will be investigated, with arrests where warranted. No individual or group is above the law, regardless of political affiliation,” the provincial commissioner stressed.
Political parties, independent candidates, supporters, community leaders, traditional authorities and civil society organisations are urged to promote tolerance, respect differing views and uphold the rights of others.
Residents are also encouraged to vote peacefully and avoid being provoked or drawn into unlawful conduct.
Police urged residents to report suspicious activities, threats and election-related criminal incidents immediately to the nearest police station or through established law enforcement reporting channels.
“PROV JOINTS also urges the public to refrain from sharing unverified information, provocative messages and misleading social media content, as such material can create panic, fuel tensions and undermine confidence in the electoral process.
“Members of the public are encouraged to verify information through official and credible sources before it is shared. PROV JOINTS calls on all Northern Cape residents to demonstrate tolerance, unity and responsible citizenship in support of peaceful, safe and secure elections,” Otola said. – SAnews.gov.za
