Funza Lushaka 2027: two deadlines teaching applicants must know
Returning applicants have until 30 November 2026, while first-time applicants have until 31 January 2027. Check funding limits and service obligations before applying.
Returning Funza Lushaka bursary applicants have until 30 November 2026 to apply for 2027 funding. First-time applicants have a later deadline of 31 January 2027, according to the Department of Basic Education.
Applications are online through the government's e-services portal, and the department's 2027 notes say applicants need a valid student number and acceptance or provisional acceptance at their chosen university.
The bursary supports approved teaching qualifications and priority subjects. The 2027 notes explicitly exclude the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), so applicants should check their qualification and subject choices before relying on this funding.
Funding is capped. Where university fees exceed the bursary's limit, recipients must cover the shortfall. Meeting the minimum criteria does not guarantee an award, and continued funding is not automatic.
Recipients must teach for one year for each year funded. The notes also say graduates must actively apply for public-school teaching posts and should not expect preferential placement by a provincial education department.
