A Carletonville political activist says his voter registration was moved to a district in Mpumalanga, preventing him from standing as a ward candidate in Merafong City.
Sello Molisalife had planned to contest Ward 12 for the Merafong Agents of Change in the 4 November local government elections.
He told eNCA that he learned during the candidate-list process that his registration had been transferred across provincial boundaries. Molisalife said he had not requested the move and planned to report the matter to police as suspected fraud.
The cause of the registration change has not been established. Molisalife’s claim has not been tested by police or a court.
IEC says election timetable is fixed
IEC official James Aphane told eNCA that the commission’s election timetable could not be changed to accommodate late corrections and urged Molisalife to take the alleged unauthorised transfer to police.
The registration change means Molisalife is not listed as a voter in the ward he wanted to contest. Candidate eligibility in a ward is tied to the election timetable and the voter’s registered district.
Molisalife acknowledged that checking his registration earlier could have identified the problem before candidate lists were finalised. He said he would remain active in his community despite being unable to contest the ward.
The IEC had not announced a separate investigation into the specific transfer at the time of publication.
