The Acting Minister of Police, Firoz Cachalia, met with Electoral Commission Commissioners on the progress of the special voting process and operational arrangements in place ahead of tomorrow’s Local Government Elections.

The Acting Minister met with Commissioners during a visit to the Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa’s (IEC) National Results Operations Centre at Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand on Tuesday.

Tuesday, 3 November 2026, marked the second and final day for those approved to cast their special votes in the 2026 Local Government Elections.

Special Voting is an inclusivity mechanism in the country’s electoral scheme, catering for registered voters who may not be able to reach voting stations due to physical infirmity or disability, and for those who may, for various reasons, not be in a position to present themselves on Election Day at voting stations within the wards where they are registered.

The Minister was accompanied by the Deputy Ministers of Police, Dr Polly Boshielo and Justice and Constitutional Development, Andries Nel.

Cachalia’s visit came as the police have effected arrests in connection with reported incidents around elections, with law enforcement reiterating that lawlessness and any conduct that threatens the integrity of the electoral process will not be tolerated.

The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) continues to coordinate and strengthen operational readiness to ensure that all necessary security measures are in place ahead of tomorrow’s Voting Day.

The Police Ministry assured the public that every effort is being made, in collaboration with the IEC and relevant stakeholders, to support the delivery of free, fair and peaceful elections.

At a media briefing earlier, the Commission condemned incidents of intimidation, disruption and damage to election materials, adding that it is taking legal action against the individuals and political parties involved.

“The Commission has also noted a sharp increase in actions of prohibited conduct and glaring criminal behaviour by some political party supporters and candidates. These range from intimidation of election officials, disruption of voting processes and tampering with election materials,” Mamabolo said.
