The South African Police Service is inviting members of the community to serve the country on a voluntary basis.
“A reservist performs voluntary duty in the South African Police service without any expectation of receiving compensation on duty,” said SAPS.
In terms of the South African Reserve Police Service, one may be called up by the National Commissioner to perform duties in order to strengthen and support the police in performing its constitutional mandate as set out in section 205 of the constitution of the Republic of South Africa 1996.
Reservists will be expected to perform a minimum of 16 hours of voluntary duty per month.
SAPS has outlined these as basic appointment requirements for Reservists:
- Be a South African citizen by birth.
- At least 20 years and below 50 years of which documentary proof must be furnished.
- Must complete a health questionnaire determined by the National Commissioner at his or her own cost, which is confirmed by a registered medical practitioner.
- Be mentally and physically fit to perform the duties of a reservist.
- Good and sound character, for which background enquiries must be obtained.
- Must fit the psychometric profile and must have successfully completed any other test that may be determined by the National Commissioner.
- Be in possession of at least a Senior certificate (grade 12) or a National Certificate (Vocational) Level 4, of which documentary proof must be provided.
- Be able to speak, read and write at least two official languages, of which one must be English.
- Must allow his or her fingerprints and DNA sample to be taken. Must complete an assessment questionnaire and must be vetted and screened.
- Must be able to undergo training as may be determined by the National Commissioner.
- Be prepared to take the prescribed oath of office.
- Must understand that his or her services may be terminated at the age of 60.
- Employment is not a prerequisite requirement, but applicants who are employed will receive preference. One must provide proof of employment where relevant.
- Must provide his or her residential address.
- Must not have had a criminal record or any other criminal or departmental cases pending against him or her (all departmental and criminal cases must be cleared.
- Must also not have a tattoo mark of which will be visible if the person wears a uniform, and that is irreconcilable with the objectives of the service.
