A 53-year-old man is expected to make his second appearance in the Cullinan Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday in connection with the death of 20-year-old Tshepang Nyathi.
The man is accused of stabbing Nyathi during Spring Day celebrations in Refilwe, east of Pretoria, last Tuesday. The allegation has not been tested in court and the accused has not been convicted.
According to the police account reported by SABC News, a group of young people had been splashing one another with water when tensions developed with bystanders and passers-by.
Nyathi was allegedly stabbed during the confrontation and later died at a local clinic. The precise sequence of events and the accused’s response to the charge will form part of the court process.
The accused first appeared after his arrest and is due back before the magistrate as the case continues. SABC News reported that Tuesday’s hearing would be his second appearance.
The incident drew attention beyond Refilwe after it became linked to the annual practice of splashing water during Spring Day celebrations. Government officials condemned the killing, while Nyathi’s family called for the case to move swiftly through the justice system.
No plea or finding has been recorded in the information available before Tuesday’s appearance. Details of bail, the next court date and the formal charge sheet are expected to be confirmed in court.
EBNewsDaily will update the report when the magistrate’s court confirms the outcome of the appearance.
