SAFA presidential candidate Sandile Zungu says his campaign has secured enough regional support to challenge incumbent Danny Jordaan when the association votes in Johannesburg on Saturday.
The election is scheduled for 12 September and pits Zungu against Jordaan for the presidency of the South African Football Association.
SAFA has 52 regions. A candidate needs the support of at least 28 regions to secure a simple majority if all regional votes are cast as expected.
Zungu told SABC Sport that his campaign had worked to win over regions that had not initially committed to either side. He said the campaign was also seeking support among national executive committee, associate and special members who will vote.
His confidence remains a campaign claim rather than a confirmed count. The result will be determined by the eligible delegates in the formal ballot.
Jordaan’s camp has displayed endorsements from regional leadership in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape. Zungu said those public endorsements had not changed his campaign’s expectation of victory.
The contest comes days after Zungu publicly pressed SAFA over outstanding Bafana Bafana World Cup bonuses. SAFA said the payments had been delayed by tax requirements in the United States and Mexico.
Saturday’s vote will decide who leads the national association through the next term. The confirmed result and final vote totals will only be known after the election process is completed.
