Two people were injured when a light aircraft crashed near the intersection of New Road and the R101 in Glen Austin, Midrand, on Tuesday afternoon, according to road-safety organisation Arrive Alive.
The crash also triggered a secondary motor-vehicle accident and caused major traffic disruption in the area.
Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson Xolani Fihla told SABC News that emergency services were at the scene while police secured the area and diverted traffic. The number and condition of people injured had not yet been confirmed by the authorities at the time of that report.
Arrive Alive later said the aircraft had two occupants and that both were receiving medical attention. No further information on the extent of their injuries was immediately available.
Motorists were urged to avoid the affected section while emergency teams worked at the scene. Traffic delays were reported around New Road and the R101, a busy route through Midrand.
The cause of the crash was not immediately known. Aviation accidents are investigated by the relevant authorities, and no finding on what led to the incident had been released by late Tuesday afternoon.
This is a developing story and will be updated when emergency services or aviation authorities release confirmed information.
