The City of Tshwane has launched an online platform for businesses and informal traders to apply for and renew operating licences and permits.

The portal allows applicants to submit applications, track their progress and complete renewals without visiting municipal offices, according to the city.

The service covers businesses including spaza shops, salons, hawkers and car washes.

MMC for Economic Development and Spatial Planning Sarah Mabotsa said the platform was intended to improve turnaround times and make municipal processes easier for entrepreneurs.

The city said the system was live and could be accessed through the official City of Tshwane website. Applicants should use the municipal site to reach the service and check the documentation required for their type of business.

Operating permits and licences form part of the local regulatory process for several categories of trading activity. Requirements can differ depending on the business, location and services offered.

The digital service brings application, renewal and progress tracking into one online process. It is aimed at reducing the need for repeated in-person visits while giving applicants a clearer view of the status of their submissions.

Tshwane has a large formal and informal trading sector spread across Pretoria and surrounding communities. The new portal is the city’s latest move to shift high-volume municipal services online.
