ANC members from Tshwane and Johannesburg are expected to march to the party’s Luthuli House headquarters on Monday over disputed ward councillor candidate lists.
eNCA reported that branch members planned the protest after raising objections to the candidate-selection process ahead of the local government elections.
The protest follows a wider dispute inside the ANC over the submission and approval of candidate lists. The objections are claims by party members and do not by themselves establish that any list was unlawfully changed.
Candidate process under pressure
The ANC’s approved candidate-selection rules set out branch nomination, screening and approval processes. Disputes over whether those processes were followed have also reached the courts.
Sowetan reported earlier this month that a court had been asked to rule on the validity of candidate lists submitted during the process.
Monday’s march places fresh pressure on the party’s national leadership to address complaints from Gauteng branches. The ANC had not announced a final resolution of the branch objections at the time of publication.
