Heavy downpours, severe thunderstorms and localised flooding are possible in parts of South Africa this weekend, according to a forecast attributed to the South African Weather Service.

The Northern Cape and Free State could experience damaging winds, hail and heavy rain. KwaZulu-Natal and parts of the Eastern Cape are also expected to remain wet, with flooding a concern in some areas.

Conditions are forecast to stay partly cloudy on Saturday, with isolated showers and thundershowers over much of the country. The unsettled weather is expected to continue into Sunday and Monday.

Cool and cloudy conditions across several provinces

Gauteng can expect cloudy and cool weather before conditions become partly cloudy later. Limpopo and Mpumalanga are forecast to be cool to warm, with showers and rain in places.

The Western Cape is expected to be cool to warm, with possible showers and thundershowers in the north-east. Cloudy and windy conditions are forecast in parts of the Northern Cape.

Motorists should take care on wet roads where heavy rain may reduce visibility or cause water to collect. Conditions can change quickly during thunderstorms, particularly in low-lying areas.

Residents should follow current South African Weather Service warnings and instructions from local disaster-management authorities as the system develops. The forecast describes possible conditions across broad areas and does not mean every location will experience severe weather.
