The N12 was closed in both directions near Lenasia on Monday morning, 19 October, with Johannesburg metro police diverting motorists between Abu Baker Asvat Drive and the K43 Klipspruit Valley Road.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department’s warning, reported by The Citizen at 06:26 and eNCA at 06:30, affects commuters travelling through Lenasia, Eldorado Park, Soweto and surrounding areas. Officers were managing traffic at the affected stretch.

Routes listed by JMPD

Motorists were advised to avoid the closed section and use alternatives where appropriate to their journeys:

  • R554, also known as Nirvana Drive
  • Golden Highway, the R553
  • Chris Hani Road and Main Road through Soweto and Eldorado Park
  • Impala Road

JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla also urged drivers not to try to enter the N12 via the Abu Baker Asvat Drive or K43 off-ramps, according to The Citizen.

No reopening time confirmed

The Citizen reported that officers had been deployed on Sunday and that the closure continued into Monday’s commute. The reports linked the blockage to a protest, but the exact grievances had not been confirmed.

Neither morning report gave a confirmed reopening time. Drivers were urged to allow for delays, exercise caution and follow traffic officers’ directions. The listed alternatives are diversions, not a guarantee of congestion-free travel.
