Four Betway Premiership clubs secured Carling Knockout quarter-final places over the weekend, while Durban City completed their first qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup group stage on Sunday, 25 October.

AmaZulu and Sekhukhune United joined Saturday’s winners, Golden Arrows and Siwelele, in the domestic cup’s last eight. These were knockout results rather than league fixtures: they decided progression, not Premiership points.

Four Carling quarter-final places settled

AmaZulu beat Kruger United 1–0 at Mbombela Stadium, with substitute Hendrick Ekstein converting a 78th-minute penalty after a handball, according to SuperSport’s match report.

Sekhukhune closed Sunday’s programme with a 3–1 win over Richards Bay at Peter Mokaba Stadium. Their victory completed the weekend’s four scheduled last-16 matches, but not the whole round.

Arrows had opened the round with a 4–0 victory over Chippa United at King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday. Junior Dion and Sabelo Sithole scored before half-time, putting the hosts on course for the quarter-finals.

Siwelele needed a shootout after a goalless match, including extra time, against Polokwane City. They won 4–3 on penalties, despite finishing extra time with ten men.

Contrasting continental outcomes

Durban City won 3–0 away to AS Port Louis 2000 on Sunday to complete a 6–1 aggregate victory in the CAF Confederation Cup. Gaston Sirino, Haashim Domingo and Ethan Brooks scored as City secured their first group-stage appearance.

Their qualification followed contrasting Friday results for three other South African clubs. Orlando Pirates beat African Stars 4–0 to reach the CAF Champions League group stage 5–0 on aggregate.

Mamelodi Sundowns were eliminated by Wiliete after a 1–1 home draw left their tie level on aggregate, with the Angolan club progressing on away goals. Kaizer Chiefs beat Red Arrows 1–0 on the night but lost the Confederation Cup tie 3–2 on penalties after a 1–1 aggregate draw.

Three URC wins for South African teams

The Bulls beat Ulster 34–26 and the Stormers overcame the Scarlets 52–40 on Saturday. Those home victories followed the Sharks’ 36–21 win at Cardiff on Friday, while the Lions lost 31–10 at Edinburgh.

SA Rugby’s Sunday round-up placed the Bulls third and Stormers fourth, both on 16 points, with the Sharks fifth on 15. The Lions were 11th on nine points.

Still to come in the Carling Knockout

The PSL schedule lists three remaining last-16 ties for Tuesday, 27 October: Pirates against Milford, Sundowns against Marumo Gallants and Chiefs against TS Galaxy. All kick off at 19:00 SAST.

Durban City host Stellenbosch at Chatsworth Stadium on Wednesday, 28 October, also at 19:00 SAST. Those four ties remain outstanding.
