A 34-year-old man is expected to appear in court on Monday after he was found inside the parliamentary precinct in Cape Town, police say.

According to a report by eNCA, the man allegedly climbed over a perimeter fence on Thursday night and was discovered in the Parliament yard on Friday morning.

Police opened a trespassing case after he was apprehended. No injuries or damage were reported in the information released about the incident.

The man’s identity had not been made public by Saturday afternoon. The allegation against him has not yet been tested in court.

Parliament’s historic buildings are undergoing extensive repair and restoration work following the January 2022 fire that damaged the National Assembly chamber and sections of the Old Assembly building.

The precinct has remained an active construction and security site while parliamentary sittings and committee work continue in alternative venues.

The circumstances in which the man entered the precinct, how long he was inside and whether any additional charges may be considered were not detailed in the initial report.

He is expected to face a trespassing charge when he appears in court on Monday.
