Lucas Legabe is expected back in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on Monday as his bail application continues in the case involving cocaine allegedly stolen from Hawks premises.
SABC News reported that the court is expected to deliver its decision after hearing argument in the 49-year-old’s bail bid.
Legabe faces charges linked to the alleged theft of 541 kilograms of cocaine. The drugs, valued by investigators at about R200 million, had been seized during an operation in Isipingo in June 2021 and were later stored at the Hawks’ offices in Port Shepstone.
The cocaine was allegedly removed from the premises in November 2021. Legabe has denied taking part in the theft.
Follow-up to earlier proceedings
The bail decision follows evidence and argument heard last week. IOL reported on 9 September that judgment had been reserved, while The Citizen also covered the state’s case opposing his release.
The charges remain allegations. Legabe is presumed innocent unless proved guilty in court.
Monday’s proceedings are the latest step in a case that has centred on how a large quantity of seized drugs disappeared from a secure law-enforcement facility.
