The Namibian goalkeeper Virgil Vries who was a regular for Swallows last season has been overlooked plenty times this season with Mamelodi Sundowns’ loanee being the favourite to be between the Dube Birds’ sticks.
Since the beginning of this campaign, the former Kaizer Chiefs shot stopper has only made four appearances in the league which saw him conceding three goals.
Vries who joined Swallows as a free agent in 2019 is expected to leave in the January transfer window.
“Virgil Vries is on his way out,” said a source close to the club according to KickOff Magazine.
“More than other issues the club is trying to keep a manageable squad as some of the players have not yet made an appearance for the club this season.
Adding to the 32-year-old’s inability to get the game time is Thela Ngobeni who has become a second choice for Dylan Kerr’s side.
“You must also remember there is tough competition for the number 1 jersey with Thela Ngobeni and Jody February fighting for the same position.”
Moreover, Vuyo Mere who played a huge role is Swallows’ promotion to the DStv Premiership is another player who’s reportedly on his way out as his relationship with the club has gone sour.
Swallows will be looking to pick up the form in the second round of the season as they have been below par so far. Fighting to avoid relegation isn’t what many expected from them taking into account that they were a strongest team in the chasing packing behind Sundowns.
In the last 18 league games, they only won twice and are in 14th position on the table.
