Large parts of Johannesburg South are without electricity after an incident at the Fordsburg substation affected the Orlando Switching Station early on Tuesday.

City Power said the disruption cut supply to thousands of customers and affected Rand Water pumping operations, raising the risk of knock-on water interruptions.

Lenasia, Hursthill and Reuven were among the areas reported without power. Substations serving Soweto, Eldorado Park, Industria, Nancefield and Eikenhof were also affected.

Technical teams were expected to inspect the site and determine the extent of the damage. City Power had not provided an estimated restoration time by 06:15 SAST.

The utility’s initial information did not specify the cause of the incident or how long repairs might take. It also did not provide a complete street-by-street list of affected customers.

The impact on pumping means households may experience water-supply pressure or interruptions even where their own electricity remains on. Rand Water had not published a separate restoration timetable in the information available early on Tuesday.

The outage follows a difficult period for Johannesburg’s electricity and water networks, where faults at major supply points can affect several suburbs at once. The latest incident is centred on the Fordsburg and Orlando network links.

City Power said further details would follow once its teams completed the assessment. Any restoration estimate issued later will depend on the damage found on site.
