Police seized a consignment of cocaine with an estimated street value of R200 million at OR Tambo International Airport on Sunday, 25 October, according to a report by eNCA citing police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe.

The consignment arrived on a flight from São Paulo in Brazil, the broadcaster reported. It said the substance was concealed in items resembling tape cartridges and was reportedly found in four suitcases.

Mathe was quoted as saying flights to and from Brazil are checked regularly.

Eyewitness News separately reported that the seizure took place on Sunday afternoon and that an investigation was under way. Its earlier report put the estimated value at more than R200 million.

The reports reviewed did not specify the weight of the consignment or whether anyone had been arrested in connection with the airport seizure. The exact time of the interception was also not given.
