Kimi Antonelli won the Spanish Grand Prix at Madrid’s new circuit on Sunday to extend his Formula One championship lead to 81 points after 14 rounds.
The Mercedes driver secured his eighth victory of the season after a virtual safety car and a slow McLaren pit stop changed the order at the front.
Max Verstappen finished second for Red Bull, 4.3 seconds behind Antonelli. Lando Norris was third, a further 0.7 seconds back.
Norris loses lead during pit sequence
Norris started from pole and led the early stages. He was unable to enter the pits before the virtual safety car period ended after Lance Stroll stopped on track.
McLaren brought Norris in on the following lap, but a seven-second stop dropped him to fifth on the road and effectively fourth once Charles Leclerc completed his stop.
Antonelli acknowledged after the race that Norris had been in position to win before the pit sequence turned the contest.
Leclerc finished fourth for Ferrari, while Antonelli’s Mercedes teammate George Russell was fifth.
Liam Lawson, Franco Colapinto, Oscar Piastri, Arvid Lindblad and Nico Hulkenberg completed the points-scoring positions.
Antonelli now has 292 championship points. Russell is second on 211.
Lewis Hamilton retired after suffering a brake problem.
