National and provincial election-security structures are fully operational ahead of special voting, NATJOINTS chairperson Lieutenant General Tebello Mosikili said at a briefing in Tshwane on Sunday.
According to the government news agency SAnews, voting stations have undergone security assessments, with police deployments shaped by identified threats and local operational needs.
The approach combines intelligence assessments with contingency plans, mobile operational teams and specialised units. The South African National Defence Force is on standby to assist police in hotspot areas if needed.
The NATJOINTS Coordinating Centre will track developments across all nine provinces and coordinate responses. Authorities said the centre would provide early warning of incidents so resources could be directed where required.
Election deployments will run alongside ordinary policing. Police stations will continue handling complaints, emergencies and criminal investigations during the voting period.
NATJOINTS also plans daily media briefings during the elections to report significant operational developments.
Special voting takes place on Monday and Tuesday, ahead of the local government elections on Wednesday, 4 November. Approved home-visit voters should remain at their registered addresses until officials arrive, as explained in the IEC’s home-visit guidance.
