The South African Police Service (SAPS) has seized drugs with an estimated street value of over R9.7 million and arrested a 38-year-old suspect during an intelligence-driven operation in Gqeberha.

The suspect, arrested on Saturday, is expected to appear before the Gqeberha Magistrates’ Court on Monday to face drug-related charges, while investigations remain ongoing.

The operation was conducted by the SAPS National Organised Crime Intervention, which targets violent organised crime, as part of efforts to disrupt drug trafficking and dismantle organised criminal networks.

According to the SAPS, a team operating under Operation Ukubuza executed a search warrant at an identified address in Rowallan Park, Gqeberha, following intelligence-led information.

“During the operation, police found a suspect inside a vehicle parked in the garage at the premises. A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of various types of drugs suspected to be mandrax, cocaine and tik, resulting in the arrest of the suspect,” the police said in a statement.

Police also found drug-packaging materials and cash believed to be the proceeds of crime. The suspected drug substances will undergo forensic analysis to confirm their exact composition.

The SAPS remains committed to intensifying operations aimed at dismantling organised criminal networks and disrupting the illicit drug trade, which threatens the safety and well-being of communities. – SAnews.gov.za
