Choosing a university starts with the qualification you want, the subjects you can offer and the environment in which you can realistically study. This guide introduces ten South African universities and the practical questions that help turn a long list into an application plan.
How we selected these ten
This is an unscored editorial shortlist across six provinces, selected for a spread of locations and academic offerings supported by official institutional information. It is not a claim that these are the country’s ten highest-ranked institutions or that one is best for every subject. Entries follow their commonly used names in alphabetical order. Information was checked on 3 November 2026; no campus visits or first-hand course reviews are claimed, and no placement was sold. We omit changing fees and deadlines: verify the current prospectus and application cycle directly.

1. North-West University
Where: Mahikeng, Potchefstroom and Vanderbijlpark. Investigate: Multi-campus study.
North-West University’s three campuses are in Mahikeng, Potchefstroom and Vanderbijlpark, spanning North West and Gauteng. Its academic offering includes education, engineering, health sciences, humanities and other fields. The practical choice is therefore more specific than simply choosing “NWU”: identify the campus and delivery mode of your exact programme. A distance-learning option in one field does not establish that another qualification is available remotely. Compare accommodation and transport at the relevant location, then read the faculty’s module structure and progression rules. Keep the programme code beside your application documents so that you do not confuse similar qualification names at different campuses or levels.

2. Rhodes University
Where: Makhanda, Eastern Cape. Investigate: A university-town setting.
Rhodes is based in Makhanda, with faculties including commerce, education, humanities, law, pharmacy and science. That combination gives prospective students a range of academic routes in one university-town setting. Start with the subject combinations and degree rules rather than assuming that a broad degree title specifies every module you will take. If you are considering pharmacy or another professional pathway, investigate its specific selection and progression requirements. Compare residence arrangements with off-campus accommodation and plan travel home as part of the annual budget. Postgraduate applicants should identify a department and potential research fit before treating the university’s overall reputation as enough information to make a choice.

3. Stellenbosch University
Where: Western Cape. Investigate: Ten faculties and multiple study locations.
Stellenbosch University lists ten faculties, including AgriSciences, education, medicine and health sciences, engineering, and arts and social sciences. This breadth makes it a useful institution to investigate across several study interests. The next step is to narrow that broad offering to a specific programme, teaching location and language arrangement. Do not assume that every qualification is taught on the same campus or under identical conditions. Ask how practical work, placements or laboratory modules fit into the timetable. For a fair comparison with another university, use the same qualification level and compare required subjects, total study costs and accommodation rather than relying on a general institutional ranking alone.

4. University of Cape Town
Where: Cape Town, Western Cape. Investigate: Six broad faculties.
UCT’s faculty structure covers commerce, engineering and the built environment, health sciences, humanities, law and science. That range gives applicants several routes to investigate within a research university in Cape Town. Begin with the relevant faculty handbook: a university-wide admissions summary cannot explain every programme’s subject requirements or selection process. For a professional degree, also ask about the training route beyond the qualification itself. Build a realistic living-cost comparison and establish where your teaching and any practical work will take place. Postgraduate candidates should look for an appropriate research group and available supervision, since the best institutional name on a shortlist may still be the wrong match for a particular project.

5. University of the Free State
Where: Free State. Investigate: Programme and campus comparison.
The University of the Free State describes itself as research-led, student-centred and regionally engaged. Its official site separates prospective-student information, academic faculties, postgraduate study and campus life, providing a useful route into a more detailed comparison. Start by confirming the campus and qualification you intend to apply for. Programme content, entry routes and accommodation should be checked together rather than inferred from a general university description. If you are comparing an extended or alternative route with a standard degree, ask how the duration and curriculum differ. Keep tuition, housing, transport and study materials in the same budget. A funding application and an academic application also need their own records and follow-up.

6. University of Johannesburg
Where: Johannesburg, Gauteng. Investigate: Four-campus metropolitan institution.
UJ’s four main campuses are Auckland Park Kingsway, Auckland Park Bunting Road, Doornfontein and Soweto. Its study offering spans different faculties and the College of Business and Economics. This metropolitan spread makes the location of a particular programme an important part of choosing it. Map the actual journey between your accommodation and teaching venue instead of treating all Johannesburg addresses as interchangeable. Compare qualification type carefully: a diploma, degree and postgraduate programme can serve different purposes even within the same field. Read the current prospectus for the exact programme code, subject prerequisites and practical components. For design or other portfolio-based routes, check whether additional selection material is required.

7. University of KwaZulu-Natal
Where: KwaZulu-Natal. Investigate: Colleges spanning major study fields.
UKZN organises its academic work through colleges covering humanities; agriculture, engineering and science; health sciences; and law and management studies. Its campus structure means that an applicant needs to establish where a chosen programme is taught, rather than selecting a university name without a location. Compare the programme handbook with your school subjects and intended career direction. For a course involving laboratories, clinical work or field activities, ask how those requirements affect time and travel. The right comparison also includes support services and accommodation near the teaching site. A postgraduate applicant should confirm supervision and project fit directly with the relevant school before drawing conclusions from an institution-wide research reputation.

8. University of Pretoria
Where: Pretoria and other teaching locations. Investigate: Nine faculties and a business school.
The University of Pretoria offers study across nine faculties and a business school. Its range includes veterinary science, giving applicants an option that is particularly important to investigate through the relevant faculty’s own information. Different campuses and teaching locations mean that “Pretoria” is not a complete description of a student’s daily routine. Identify the exact programme, its practical training requirements and where those activities occur. Business-school study should also be distinguished from an undergraduate business qualification. When comparing entry routes, look beyond an overall points score to the specified school subjects and any additional selection steps. Ask about the current curriculum and professional pathway rather than relying on an old prospectus or a general university league table.

9. University of the Western Cape
Where: Western Cape. Investigate: Dentistry and a broad faculty offering.
UWC’s faculties include arts and humanities, community and health sciences, dentistry, economic and management sciences, education, law and natural sciences. That breadth offers several routes for a prospective student to compare. Dentistry, for example, requires a much more specific investigation than a general interest in “health”: identify the exact qualification, selection process and professional training route. For any programme, inspect the modules and practical components alongside the admission criteria. Check teaching locations and residence or commuting arrangements before estimating costs. The university’s official site separates faculty-specific requirements from general admissions information, a useful reminder that meeting a broad institutional threshold does not by itself establish admission to a particular course.

10. University of the Witwatersrand
Where: Johannesburg, Gauteng. Investigate: Urban research and professional study.
Wits is closely connected with Johannesburg, with its main urban presence in Braamfontein and Parktown and activities extending beyond those areas. Its official institutional account highlights health sciences, humanities, business, engineering, mining research and scientific work. For an applicant, those broad fields are a starting point rather than a substitute for comparing actual degrees. Establish the faculty, teaching site and practical requirements relevant to your proposed study. An urban location can create useful connections, but it also makes a realistic transport and accommodation plan essential. At postgraduate level, compare departments, research groups and supervision directly. The institution’s overall standing cannot tell you whether a particular laboratory, project or supervisor is the right fit for your interests.

Before you apply
Make a comparison sheet containing the exact qualification name and code, required subjects, selection steps, campus, duration, tuition and living costs. Check the actual teaching language and mode. Keep residence and funding applications separate from academic admission, and record their respective deadlines. For regulated professions, verify the current qualification and registration pathway with the appropriate professional body. Minimum requirements are not an offer, and a place on this list is not an admission or funding guarantee.
