Looking for an anime series but unsure where to begin? These ten selections offer different entry points: pirate adventures, volleyball rivalries, supernatural mysteries, family comedy and reflective fantasy. Choose a premise that interests you rather than trying to follow every popular franchise at once.

How we selected these ten

This is an EBNewsDaily editorial starter list, not a popularity chart or a scored ranking. We selected contrasting story ideas and viewing commitments, using official publisher descriptions and franchise information checked on 3 November 2026. Numbers organise the guide. The summaries introduce the opening premise without revealing later outcomes. They are researched descriptions, not claims that we reviewed every episode. No placement was sold. South African streaming rights, available seasons, subtitles and age classifications must be checked with the licensed service before subscribing.

1. Naruto

Masashi Kishimoto’s story follows a young ninja whose mischief sits alongside a serious ambition to excel. Training, relationships and the wish to be recognised give the adventure a clear starting point. It is a useful choice if you enjoy watching an initially underestimated character develop within a larger community. The franchise spans different series and generations, so a newcomer should identify the original Naruto before jumping into Shippuden or a later continuation. Treat this as a longer viewing project rather than a quick weekend watch. Check the episode ordering in your service’s catalogue, and remember that a manga volume and an anime season are different releases.

2. One Piece

Monkey D. Luffy sets out to find an extraordinary treasure and become King of the Pirates. His rubber-like powers bring an unusual limitation: he cannot swim. Eiichiro Oda’s premise combines a voyage with the building of a crew, making it an entry point for viewers drawn to discovery and companionship. The scale of the franchise is part of the decision. Begin with the animated series’ opening story rather than assuming that a film, a live-action adaptation or a later season provides the same introduction. Sample the early adventure before committing to a lengthy watchlist. This guide does not suggest that you must catch up with every release to enjoy the starting journey.

3. Death Note

A high-achieving student, Light Yagami, finds a supernatural notebook that gives him the power to cause deaths by writing names. The central question quickly becomes what someone does with that power, rather than simply whether he can defeat a stronger opponent. Created by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, the story offers an entry point for viewers who prefer moral puzzles and psychological tension to a training adventure. VIZ identifies the television anime as a 37-episode series, giving a clearer commitment than an open-ended franchise. The premise involves killing and troubling choices; animation does not make it children’s entertainment. Select the television anime rather than confusing it with a separate live-action adaptation.

4. Spy x Family

A spy needs a convincing family for an undercover assignment, but his invented household brings together an assassin and a telepath as well. Tatsuya Endo’s premise turns secrecy into a source of both danger and domestic comedy. It is an appealing starting idea for someone who wants relationships and humour alongside action, with the audience aware of secrets the characters cannot freely share. The family setting should not be read as an automatic age recommendation: espionage and an assassin’s work are still part of the story. Start with the television series’ introduction to the household, then check how any supplementary film fits into the releases available through your licensed provider.

5. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba

Tanjiro Kamado’s ordinary life is destroyed by an attack on his family. His surviving sister, Nezuko, has become a demon, giving his journey a personal aim: finding a way to restore her humanity. Koyoharu Gotouge’s story therefore combines a supernatural conflict with a sibling relationship. Choose it if that rescue premise interests you, while taking the horror and violence seriously when deciding who should watch. Different releases can package parts of a franchise’s story in different ways, so read the season and arc labels before buying or starting a film. Begin with Tanjiro and Nezuko’s introduction rather than relying on clips from later battles to explain the characters.

6. Jujutsu Kaisen

Yuji Itadori is drawn into a conflict involving cursed spirits after acting to protect his friends. A school of sorcerers and the dangerous legacy of Ryomen Sukuna form part of Gege Akutami’s supernatural world. This is a starting point for viewers who want a darker battle story with an organised system of threats and abilities. The school setting does not make the material light: the publisher places the franchise in horror as well as fantasy and action. Use the first television season to establish the characters before choosing among later instalments. Also distinguish the completed source manga from the release status of its animation; the availability of a final book does not tell you which episodes a local service carries.

7. One-Punch Man

Saitama has a problem that reverses the familiar superhero struggle: he is so powerful that finding a satisfying opponent is difficult. That contrast between extraordinary strength and an unremarkable outward appearance provides the comic premise. ONE and Yusuke Murata’s franchise is worth considering if you like the idea of superhero conventions being turned around, alongside monster battles and exaggerated action. Comedy is not a promise of gentle content, so check the classification and descriptors on the version you plan to watch. Start with Saitama’s introduction rather than a later season’s headline fight. The webcomic, manga and animated adaptation also represent different forms of the story, which matters when following recommendations online.

8. Haikyu!!

Shoyo Hinata wants to succeed at volleyball despite being short for the sport. An early rival, Tobio Kageyama, becomes a teammate, setting up a story about learning to work with someone you once wanted to defeat. Haruichi Furudate’s premise offers an alternative to supernatural battles: the challenge is athletic and collective. It is a useful option if competition, practice and team relationships sound more engaging than an elaborate fantasy world. New viewers can begin with the television story’s opening rather than a later event film. Following the players’ beginnings gives their relationships context. For younger viewers, still consult the local classification and available language options instead of assuming every sports animation has the same audience.

9. Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End

Frieren begins from an unusual fantasy question: what happens after the heroes defeat the great enemy? An elf mage will outlive her former companions, making time and the meaning of shared experience central to the premise. The story by Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe is a choice for viewers interested in reflection as well as a journey through a magical world. Its starting idea gives loss and memory a different emphasis from a straightforward quest to become the strongest. Begin with the opening television episodes to understand those relationships. If you move to the manga, check the volume and chapter carefully; publisher pages can describe later developments that a new anime viewer would prefer not to discover in advance.

10. Dr. STONE

Humanity has mysteriously turned to stone. Long afterwards, Taiju awakens and reunites with science-minded Senku, whose ambition is to rebuild civilisation. Riichiro Inagaki and Boichi’s premise places knowledge and invention at the heart of an adventure rather than treating technology as a background convenience. It is a useful choice if you like asking how a society might reconstruct what it has lost. Start with the initial television storyline so the mystery and the characters’ different strengths make sense. The scientific framing remains part of entertainment: do not treat dramatic experiments or reconstructions as instructions to reproduce at home. Check the distinction between the source manga’s ending and the animated instalments available in your region.

Before you choose

Pick one premise, watch its beginning and decide whether you want to continue. Compare the age classification, episode order, subtitles, dubbing and data or download options in your own account. A publisher’s international page does not establish South African streaming availability. Use licensed services and confirm the specific season before paying. Avoid “watch order” pages that reveal later plot developments if you want to discover the story as intended.

Official VIZ franchise and source-manga pages are linked in every profile. They support the creators and introductory story premises; the viewing suggestions are EBNewsDaily’s editorial guidance.
