The United Democratic Movement is expected to name its Johannesburg mayoral candidate and launch its city election programme in Alexandra on Sunday.
SABC News reported that UDM president Bantu Holomisa and deputy president Nqabayomzi Kwankwa are expected to take part in the event. The party is positioning the launch around service delivery, accountability and the use of municipal resources in Johannesburg.
The announcement comes as political parties intensify preparations for South Africa’s 2026 local government elections. Johannesburg is expected to be one of the most closely watched contests because no single party currently commands an outright majority in the council.
The UDM has already published its broader 2026 local government manifesto. Its stated priorities include functional municipal administration, reliable basic services, accountable local leadership and support for local economic activity. Sunday’s Alexandra event is expected to translate those national themes into a Johannesburg campaign.
