EFF leader Julius Malema placed water, electricity, unemployment and corruption at the centre of the party’s local election campaign during manifesto events in the Free State and Northern Cape on Saturday.
Addressing supporters ahead of the 4 November local elections, Malema said the party would focus on improving basic services in Mangaung and would act against corruption if it gained control of municipalities.
He also promised free Wi-Fi at universities, improved health facilities and greater economic opportunities for young people in the Northern Cape. The commitments form part of the EFF’s election campaign and have not yet been tested in government.
Malema also returned to the Phala Phala matter and said the EFF would continue pursuing it politically and through parliamentary processes.
The party is challenging Parliament’s decision to rescind the appointment of Advocate Thandazani Madonsela as chief evidence leader for an impeachment committee. Malema said the matter remained important to the EFF.
The Free State and Northern Cape events form part of the party’s national campaign as political organisations intensify preparations for November’s municipal vote. Service delivery, local government finances and municipal accountability are expected to feature prominently in campaigning across both provinces.
