The IFP has renewed its promise to replace underperforming municipal leaders, making accountability for basic services part of its closing election appeal in Ulundi on Sunday.

Deputy national chairperson Thembeni kaMadlopha-Mthethwa said the party uses performance assessments to judge councillors against their responsibilities, SABC News reported from the final rally.

She said poor performance could warrant a change of councillor, mayor, deputy mayor or speaker even where the issue was not mismanagement of money.

“If you are underperforming, we are going to change you,” she said.

IFP president Velenkosini Hlabisa appealed to young and disillusioned voters to participate, presenting ethical leadership and better municipal governance as reasons to support the party.

A nationwide contest

In its official rally announcement, the IFP said it was fielding 3,188 candidates across all nine provinces: 1,922 ward candidates and 1,266 proportional-representation candidates.

The party’s 26 October announcement identified Ulundi’s Prince Mangosuthu Regional Stadium as the venue for the concluding rally and 4 November as election day.
