A presiding officer in North West died after collapsing at her post during special voting, the Electoral Commission reported on Monday.

In a separate incident, a deputy presiding officer in the uKhahlamba district was hit by a car while travelling to a voting station and taken to hospital.

The details were reported by government news agency SAnews in its account of the IEC’s briefing at the Results Operation Centre in Midrand on 2 November. The commission said it was supporting the affected officials and their families.

The SAnews report did not give a cause of death, identify either official or provide further details of the hospitalised official’s condition.

The incidents were disclosed on the first day of special voting for the 2026 local government elections. Special voting is scheduled for 2 and 3 November, ahead of the main voting day on Wednesday, 4 November.

The IEC’s separate national opening assessment set out how special voting began across the country.
