A useful university shortlist should help you compare real study options across Africa. These ten profiles span six countries and combine institutional background with questions about programmes, recognition, language and the cost of studying away from home.

How we selected these ten

This is a geographically varied editorial selection informed by Times Higher Education’s 2027 Africa table, published in October 2026. It is not the table’s ten highest institutions: several share rank bands, and we have selected a wider country spread. Numbers organise profiles by country, then university name; they are not our scores. The global bands below retain the source’s ties. Official institutional pages and THE profiles were checked on 3 November 2026. No campus visits or first-hand course reviews are claimed. No placement was sold.

1. American University in Cairo

Country: Egypt.

AUC describes its educational approach as liberal arts, with study across disciplines. For someone considering Egypt, that model is an important comparison point alongside the specific major and qualification level. Begin with the official catalogue and confirm how general requirements fit around your intended subject. An international applicant should obtain written information on recognised entry qualifications, language requirements and the full cost of study and living. Do not assume that the meaning of a course credit, semester or degree title is identical to that at home. Ask how the qualification is recognised where you intend to work or continue studying, especially if a professional registration route is part of the plan.

2. University of Ghana

Country: Ghana.

The University of Ghana, at Legon in Accra, lists colleges spanning basic and applied sciences, education, health sciences and humanities. Its official site provides distinct undergraduate, graduate and international admissions routes, helping applicants begin with the appropriate process. If you are considering study in Ghana, compare the precise degree structure and entry qualifications rather than translating requirements informally from another country’s system. Establish the campus and any practical training locations, then request the relevant fee schedule and accommodation information. For research study, identify a department and suitable academic contacts. An overall ranking offers context, but it cannot establish available supervision, a scholarship or whether a programme supports your particular career route.

3. University Mohammed VI Polytechnic

Country: Morocco.

UM6P’s base in Benguerir gives the guide a Moroccan research-university option. Its academic scope includes science and technology, humanities, economics and social sciences, business and management, and medical-related fields, as described in its THE institutional profile. The university’s official site also documents research activity and programmes at its Benguerir campus. Before applying, investigate the exact school, programme and campus, along with the language of instruction. Programme names can look familiar while entry routes and degree structures differ. Compare the research facilities relevant to your subject rather than assuming a university-wide technology headline applies equally to every course. Ask separately about admissions, funding, housing and any international-student arrangements.

4. University of Ibadan

Country: Nigeria.

The University of Ibadan’s official account traces its establishment to 1948 and describes an institution that has expanded from arts, science and medicine into a broad range of faculties. Its Nigerian setting gives prospective students another substantial academic environment to investigate. Choose a specific faculty and qualification before comparing admission routes or total cost. The relevant questions differ for an undergraduate degree, a taught postgraduate programme and a research project. International applicants should confirm how their existing qualifications are assessed and which documents must be supplied. If you intend to return to another country for work, establish professional or academic recognition in advance rather than treating an institution’s position in a global table as proof of every qualification’s portability.

5. Stellenbosch University

Country: South Africa.

Stellenbosch University’s ten faculties offer a range that includes agricultural sciences, engineering, health-related study and arts and social sciences. A prospective student comparing African institutions should investigate both the specific programme and its teaching location. Confirm the current language arrangement directly; a university’s name or a general webpage does not tell you the language of every module. Compare practical components and the structure of the qualification with alternatives elsewhere. For a research degree, academic fit and available supervision matter alongside the overall ranking. Also work through housing, travel and funding separately, since an academically attractive programme can be impractical without a workable living and financial plan.

6. University of Cape Town

Country: South Africa.

UCT brings a Cape Town option across commerce, engineering and the built environment, health sciences, humanities, law and science. For a cross-border comparison, first identify the specific faculty and degree rather than comparing the university name alone. Examine how your school or previous university qualifications meet that programme’s requirements. The overall research ranking is useful context but does not rank every subject equally or establish admission. Build tuition, accommodation, transport and any practical training into one budget. At postgraduate level, ask about research groups and supervision. UCT is one of several South African institutions in this continental selection; readers should compare the programme-level fit before deciding that a higher institutional position automatically makes it the right choice.

7. University of KwaZulu-Natal

Country: South Africa.

UKZN’s colleges cover humanities, agriculture, engineering and science, health sciences, and law and management studies. Its academic spread makes it useful to investigate across different interests, while its campus structure makes location a central practical question. An applicant comparing countries should confirm the teaching site and the form of any field, laboratory or clinical work. For a professional pathway, ask how the qualification connects with further training and recognition in your intended country of practice. Do not infer those details from the global ranking band. Compare living arrangements and support services alongside the curriculum, and use the international admissions route when your prior qualifications or residence status require it.

8. University of Pretoria

Country: South Africa.

UP’s nine faculties and business school offer a broad South African study option. Veterinary science is among the fields that deserve investigation through the specific faculty rather than a general university comparison. Start with the qualification, campus and practical-training structure, then establish how an international applicant’s prior study is assessed. A postgraduate business qualification and an undergraduate commerce degree should not be treated as interchangeable just because both relate to business. For a research application, identify a suitable group and supervision before assuming that a university-wide ranking answers the important questions. Ask about the full study pathway and where its qualification can lead, including any additional professional requirements in the country where you intend to work.

Official university information

9. University of the Witwatersrand

Country: South Africa.

Wits offers an urban Johannesburg setting associated with fields including health sciences, humanities, engineering, mining research and scientific work. Its activities extend beyond the main Braamfontein and Parktown areas, so the location of your own teaching and practical work needs checking. For an international comparison, examine the exact qualification and the rules applying to your previous study. A broad institutional reputation cannot establish professional recognition in another country. Research applicants should investigate departmental activity and supervision, while undergraduate applicants should compare subject prerequisites and selection processes. Transport and accommodation are part of the academic decision: map a realistic daily routine rather than treating proximity to a major city as a complete student-life plan.

10. Makerere University

Country: Uganda.

Makerere provides a Kampala option with a history beginning as a technical school in 1922. THE’s institutional account describes its expansion into a research university with a range of colleges and teaching and field locations. For someone considering East Africa, the important next step is to identify the programme, campus and mode of study that actually meet their needs. Ask for the current admissions information applicable to your qualifications, and establish how any practical or field components affect the schedule. For a research degree, investigate the relevant department and supervision rather than choosing from a headline ranking. International applicants should check documentation, recognition and the full cost of living and study before committing to a move.

Before choosing a country or programme

Compare the exact curriculum, qualification level, admission route and teaching language. Obtain a current total-cost estimate that includes housing, transport, insurance and travel. Confirm the qualification’s recognition and any professional registration pathway in the country where you intend to use it. Check immigration requirements through the relevant official authorities. Do not treat a ranking band as an admission offer, funding award or guarantee of a particular employment outcome.

Sources and updates

The comparison uses one ranking system and one edition: THE World University Rankings 2027 as presented in its Africa table. Institutional websites and linked profiles support the background summaries. Research checked 3 November 2026. Rankings measure selected aspects of institutions; programme fit requires a separate comparison. Fees, deadlines and scholarship availability are deliberately not inferred from a ranking.
