The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Limpopo has arrested 20 suspects for various election-related offences since the 2026 Local Government Elections began on Monday.

Law enforcement agencies continue to enforce electoral laws and maintain law and order across the province to ensure a smooth election process.

Approximately 33 cases linked to election-related incidents have been registered across Limpopo. These offences range from contravening the Electoral Act 73 of 1998, to fraud, common assault, malicious damage to property, and pointing a firearm.

“Among the incidents reported were cases where individuals allegedly contravened the Electoral Act by taking photographs of marked ballot papers using their cellphones and subsequently circulating or publishing the images on various social media platforms.

“Such conduct is prohibited in terms of electoral legislation and undermines the secrecy and integrity of the voting process,” the police said in a statement.

Police also responded to other incidents involving alleged unlawful conduct during the election period, which resulted in the opening of criminal cases and the arrest of suspects.

Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers, the Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, welcomed the arrests and commended SAPS members, other law enforcement agencies, and all stakeholders who worked tirelessly to ensure a safe and peaceful election period.

He applauded the collective efforts, dedication, and cooperation shown by all role players, emphasising the importance of partnerships and coordinated strategies in safeguarding communities, voters and election officials.

Scheepers expressed his appreciation for the members who remained committed to their duties throughout the election period and thanked stakeholders for their unwavering support, cooperation and prayers in ensuring the electoral process took place in a safe and secure environment.

He reiterated that SAPS will not hesitate to take action against anyone who violates the law, regardless of their position or affiliation, and affirmed that all reported cases will be dealt with in accordance with the law.
