The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned that hot, humid weather will create extremely uncomfortable conditions in north-eastern KwaZulu-Natal on Friday.

The weather service said the province will experience partly cloudy and warm to hot conditions, with scattered showers and thundershowers.

“It will become cloudy along the coast and adjacent interior in the afternoon. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh northerly but southerly to southwesterly in the south, becoming light to moderate south-easterly in the afternoon and spreading to Kosi Bay by the evening,” SAWS said.

On Saturday and Sunday, the eastern parts of the country are expected to be partly cloudy and cool, with isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms. Widespread showers and thunderstorms are expected in KwaZulu-Natal.

Elsewhere, conditions will be fine and warm to hot.

The weather service has issued the following warnings for Friday:

  • Yellow level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms: Thunderstorms accompanied by heavy downpours, hail and severe lightning, resulting in flooding and damage to infrastructure, are expected over the northern parts of KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and the south-western Highveld of Mpumalanga.
  • Yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms: Thunderstorms accompanied by heavy downpours, hail and severe lightning, resulting in localised flooding, are expected over the eastern parts of the Free State and North West, central parts of KwaZulu-Natal, parts of the Highveld of Mpumalanga and parts of the Western Bushveld of Limpopo.
  • Fire danger warning: Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over parts of the Northern Cape, Free State and North West, most parts of Limpopo, northern Gauteng and parts of Mpumalanga.

SAWS will continue to monitor weather conditions throughout the voting period and issue severe weather warnings and advisories as necessary.
