Approved home-visit voters should stay at their registered addresses during Monday and Tuesday’s special voting, the Electoral Commission warned on Sunday, because officials will not make a second visit if the approved voter is absent.
Speaking at Sunday’s briefing, Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo said the scale of the operation and the distances teams must cover mean they cannot return to an address after missing a voter, according to SAnews.
Anyone who misses a home visit can still vote at their voting station on Wednesday, 4 November.
Teams preparing for 678,525 home visits
The IEC has approved 678,525 home visits for people unable to reach voting stations because of physical infirmity or disability. KwaZulu-Natal accounts for 143,714 of those visits.
A total of 127,000 electoral officials will administer home visits and voting-station special voting on 2 and 3 November.
Party agents and observers may accompany home-visit teams, but voters decide whether to admit anyone other than electoral officials.
Special ballots will be secured and reconciled with voting records before being counted alongside election-day ballots.
