Former Nelson Mandela Bay deputy mayor Luxolo Namete was shot dead in Motherwell on Saturday afternoon, SABC News reported on 7 November.

The broadcaster’s report identifies Namete as a former councillor and carries a response from the United Democratic Movement. The party said his political involvement began in its Youth Vanguard and noted his service as chairperson of the municipality’s public accounts committee.

A police statement reproduced in the report concerns an unnamed 45-year-old man found dead in Motherwell at about 15:50 on Saturday. It says a murder case has been opened and is being investigated by SAPS Motherwell.

The police account does not name the deceased. The identification of Namete in this report rests on SABC’s reporting, which includes the UDM’s response, rather than a named police identification.

Police said suspects and the motive were under investigation. The available account does not establish who carried out the killing or why. Namete’s political background does not, by itself, establish a political motive.
